This class will offer authors highlights and tips for how to handle the media to promote their books.

I’ve spent nearly 20 years working as a talk and news television booker and producer. I know what attracts the media because I am a member of the media. Since publishing my debut novel Oil and Marble, I’ve personally placed stories (for myself and others) in hundreds of outlets including The New York TimesAssociated PressUS News & World ReportWoman’s Day magazine, NPR, and on network, cable, and local news.

“But you’re a TV producer! I can’t do that,” you say and you’d be wrong. I can teach you how to become your own power broker. You don’t need to spend thousands of dollars on a publicist to build and implement an effective media campaign. You can do it yourself. This class is an overview of the tools you need to become your own best media advocate.

 You Will Learn How To

·      Identify the journalists and outlets most likely to cover your story

·      Build a targeted media list complete with contact information that doesn’t require subscribing to an expensive publicity service

·      Effectively pitch to different kinds of outlets

·      Properly interact with members of the media so you don’t offend them

·      Give a press-friendly interview

·      Capitalize on all media appearances to attract more media

The media isn’t looking for a sound bite. It’s looking for a story. We are all looking for human connection, emotion, catharsis… the media is no different. Stop treating the media like a machine that turns out sound bites and start treating it like a friend that wants to share a part of your soul.
